Cellphones are Hottest Prison Contraband

According to an article from CNN, cellphones are becoming an extremely valuable item in prison.
Used to plan escapes, run criminal ventures, or talk to those on the outside, the danger they present
has caused Maryland to train and use dogs to sniff out the hidden cellphone.

Man's best friend is being used in more and more operations aimed at thwarting criminals.

The article has a link to a short video that shows the dog operating in a prison cell.

Maybe cell phone manufactures should concentrate less on the fancy features and focus some time on cell phone security. I’m not up to speed on cell phone technology but it would be beneficial if prisons could filter cell phone communication much like a network engineer can filter tcp/ip communication in a switched network. In other words deny all cell phone communication in the prison area and then add exceptions for prison staff and emergency calls. This would allow the dogs to focus on traditional contraband like weapons and drugs.

I've been loosely following the topic of blocking cell phone calls for a while. Movie theaters, restaurants, schools, airplanes, and many more venues are trying to ban phones in their establishments.

There is always an opponent that argues how cell phones provide safety. How if one cannot make an emergency phone call another may pass waiting for emergency services to arrive.

How did we ever survive without cell phones? I'm still on the sidelines with this issue. I do know though, if there comes to be a reliable technology to block cellular calls, then someone will make a technology to circumvent that restriction.
